Dome - the newest culinary concept at Desa Potato Head in Bali - features futuristic yet earthy aesthetics & sustainable design.
Fusing futuristic bolts of neon and cobalt blue, with earthy, volcanic undertones of pink inflected terracotta, and interjecting slices of greenery, the interior at Dome - the new culinary concept launched at Desa Potato Head in Bali - is up there with the dreamiest we've ever seen.
A reinterpretation of ancient cisterns, Potato Head Design Studio has collaborated with OMA to transform centuries-old typology through the use of contemporary local materials and construction techniques.
This heritage spurred the creative vision for the scheme, with a reflective blue epoxy floor, reminiscent of water in a cistern, catalysing the colour palette throughout. This carries over to the fixtures and furnishings, which, as well as being visually stunning and imparting vivid illumination, also set the tone for an immersive atmosphere.
A central circular bar with a metal surface, and stainless steel monoliths housing iconic JBL 4355 speakers, contrast with Indonesian tribal sculptures. This juxtaposition of old and new is harmoniously bridged through a selection of reclaimed wood and furniture, and antique rugs, plus books on architecture, design, art, food, and wellness curated by Wildlife Archive.
Isaac Larose, creative director, explained the significance of achieving this balance, "We wanted the space to be inviting, a place for connecting with like-minded individuals, and to be inspired by all the reference material around you.
"The architecture is so futuristic, so we wanted to break it down with natural elements. If you look closely, you can see the imperfections in the shades of the reclaimed furniture. We decided to celebrate these imperfections rather than hide them, just like we do with our wines and produce."
Beyond the realm of a beach club, hotel, and cultural centre, Potato Head is a village embodying a way of life centred on the philosophy of 'Good Times, Do Good.' It is not only a pillar of the cultural scene in Bali but also a global destination for food and drinks.
Dome is a culinary haven where natural food and wine converge in an inviting atmosphere of creativity and community. Evoking the visionary Buckminster Fuller’s Dome Home, this casual restaurant transcends dining; it’s a vibrant hub where culinary arts, creativity, and people intertwine.
David Gianotten, OMA managing partner – architect, comments, “The Dome is an all-day restaurant where connections are nurtured, work is done, and low threshold events take place. The immersive atmosphere of Dome allows the visitors to fully engage with each other and form new connections. The skylight above the communal area opens up the space to the rest of the Potato Head Studios, where all kinds of cultural events take place.”
Dome features casual yet refined dishes made from locally sourced flavours. Chef Diego Recarte’s creative approach offers a modern take on food inspired by his time spent in South American and European kitchens. The dynamic menu highlights ingredients from organic farmers and local producers, while the wine bar focuses on consciously produced wines, including natural, organic, and biodynamic options.
More than just a dining destination; Dome is designed to be a celebration of community where guests are invited to connect, mingle, and share experiences in a space designed to create interaction and connections. Every element of Dome has been meticulously curated to enhance the dining experience. 'Experience' very much being the optimum word here.
