London-based studio Kia Designs has renovated a 1,100 square feet apartment in Knightsbridge, creating a luxurious living space that features handmade metal door panels, rich handcrafted materials throughout and marble kitchen worktops inspired by Van Gogh's Starry Night.

The brief was to remodel the existing structure to form three bedrooms, three bathrooms and an open plan kitchen, dining and living room. The new layout offers a more ergonomic use of space and provides more accommodation suitable for a growing family. It also helps to bring more light into the property.

The current decor was updated and the fixtures and fittings modernised to create a comfortable, inviting retreat in one of London's most sought-after postcodes.

The design incorporates the client’s love of geometric and floral patterns, as well as her passion for colour. "We created a really functional space with a very homely vibe, that doesn’t have the staid feeling of a hotel or second home. The property has been made as light and bright as possible, as it didn't benefit from a lot of penetrative natural light and had a tendency to become dark and gloomy in the winter," explains Kia Designs.

Elsewhere, the kitchen area makes good use of an awkward space, and the design has broken up the various elements of the space using different materials so that it doesn't feel like the living room and kitchen have been merged together, rather the room is an extension of the furniture used throughout the lounge.

The living room is, of course, the central focus and is texturally interesting, bright, visually engaging and welcoming. Layered textures provide an extremely comfortable and warm space, perfect for entertaining and spending time relaxing with family. We particularly love the 3D textured wallpaper on the wall behind the sofa, and parquet wood flooring by Element7.

The bedrooms are light and cosy, with luxurious carpeting and bedding. Both have amply built-in storage with hanging space, drawer space, and storable luggage racks. The master contains window seating with additional storage.

Both bedrooms have en-suite shower rooms, with creative mosaic tile floors and soft, curved lines. There are two different types of mosaics used in each, the ceramic Bisazza mosaics and glass mosaics with iridescent foil in a snakeskin diamond pattern on one of the bathroom floors.
