Mocha Mousse announced as Pantone's Colour of the Year 2025.
For 2025, Pantone has unveiled Mocha Mousse as its Colour of the Year. Appealing to our "desire for comfort and simple pleasures", the more ways we consider it, it certainly seems fitting for the current zeitgeist.
And the rationale we feel could be interpreted three-fold.
With the rise of technology and globalisation, overwhelm seems to be a sentiment shared by many. And in our own conversations with sector professionals, this has emerged as a common theme. With this in mind, the little things can make a big difference. A cup of coffee or a bar of chocolate, perhaps. Quiet celebrations of understated luxury.
“Underpinned by our desire for every day pleasures, PANTONE 17-1230 Mocha Mousse expresses a level of thoughtful indulgence”, says Leatrice Eiseman, executive director, Pantone Color Institute.
“Sophisticated and lush, yet at the same time an unpretentious classic, PANTONE 17-1230 Mocha Mousse extends our perceptions of the browns from being humble and grounded to embrace aspirational and luxe. Infused with subtle elegance and earthy refinement, PANTONE 17-1230 Mocha Mousse presents a discrete and tasteful touch of glamour. A flavourful brown shade, PANTONE 17-1230 Mocha Mousse envelopes us with its sensorial warmth.”
This feeling of collective pressure has also placed greater emphasis on community, and knowledge sharing for the greater good.
“The everlasting search for harmony filters through into every aspect of our lives including our relationships, the work we do, our social connections and the natural environment that surrounds us. Harmony brings feelings of contentment, inspiring a positive state of inner peace, calm, and balance as well as being tuned in with the world around us.
"Harmony embraces a culture of connection and unity as well as the synthesis of our mental, spiritual and physical well-being.
“With that in mind, for Pantone Color of the Year 2025 we look to a colour that reaches into our desire for comfort and wellness, and the indulgence of simple pleasures that we can gift and share with others", adds Laurie Pressman, vice president, Pantone Color Institute.
This is all underpinned by the sentiment 'less is more', as we seek to protect our natural surroundings through more responsible sourcing and controlled consumerism for longevity. From fashion to interiors, crafts are being championed, and skill more appreciated.
For these reasons, Mocha Mousse - the raw version of our own 'Colour Story' Baked Clay - an installation at Material Source Studio - is, we feel, very much a shade of our time.
