Embodying a natural connection to the outdoors, Woodsome Road by Somner Macdonald utilises Russwood’s European Oak to bridge the surrounding landscape and the interiors.
A flood of natural light, tranquil biophilic shades, and garden views draw you through the open plan kitchen and dining area towards the back of Woodsome Road, with Ruswood’s European Oak flooring in Prime grade paving the way.
The Victorian London terraced build was renovated by Edinburgh and East Lothian based architectural practice, Somner Macdonald. Committed to using natural, high-performing and long-lasting materials, the Scottish architectural practice grounds itself in a quality and sustainability-first approach to design.
And so it comes as no surprise that Somner Macdonald - along with the client - were already well acquainted with Russwood’s product offering.
In this instance, the practice specified Russwood’s Pearl shade of European Oak flooring in Prime grade, to complement the simple, calming and assured spatial design.

Now its third project for the client, the practice was asked to re-imagine the rear of the house to improve the layout and create a light, generous and practical space for the client’s busy family lifestyle.
The kitchen and dining area feature glazed doors and windows to frame leafy views outside. A large roof light injects natural light deep into the plan, and timber and green-painted joinery reinforces the foliage-focused scheme.
“We have specified Russwood for years now. The level of customer service is second to none, and the quality of the product always delivers” - Seán Gaule, Somner Macdonald Architects
Russwood’s flooring proved the obvious choice for the project due to value for money, the range of finishes and long-lasting quality comments director architect at Somner Macdonald, Seán Gaule: “The width, length and range of finishes, combined with the prime grade option meant it was almost impossible to find another oak board that could match it in terms of cost and quality.”
Somner Macdonald and its client were also drawn to Russwood’s oak flooring due its enticing colouring, figuring and impressive durability. During the manufacturing process, wire brushes are used to tease out the softer early wood and expose the harder late wood, leaving a beautifully textured and durable surface.

This surface is further enhanced by Russwood’s finishing options. Brushed boards are delivered pre-finished with Osmo Polyx® Hardwax Oil, which penetrates deep into the wood to keep it healthy and ensure that it is water and dirt resistant.
Osmo Oil is available to designers in a wide array of different shades, with white being the selection by Somner Macdonald on this occasion in order to achieve a natural, paired back aesthetic, with “an almost bleached look”.
